self-smHi! I’m Elaine, a cartoonist and illustrator from the wilds of Canada. I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil, and I’ve been drawing comic books since I was 5! I hold a BA in Illustration from The Arts University College at Bournemouth in the UK. View my portfolio here.

Look Straight Ahead is a project that’s been rattling around in my head since 2003. I had always wanted to do an epic book-length comic of some sort, but could never seem to get one finished. I noticed that there was a distressingly small number of comics centering around mental illness, and wondered if I should try my hand at drawing one. I had suffered an actual mental breakdown in 2002 and had been devouring every book related to mental illness I could lay my hands on ever since, so I certainly knew my way around the subject. I also felt it was an important story that needed to be told.

After a number of false starts, I finally began working on LSA in earnest in 2009. It was nominated for a Joe Shuster Award in 2011 and was the recipient of a 2012 Xeric Award. The book was very well received, and a good amount of the positive press can be found here in the Press section.

My comics work has also appeared in Chilly Tales, published by 11th Dimension Press in 2014 and Then It Was Dark, published by Peppermint Monster Press in 2015. My illustration work has appeared in Broken Pencil, Verb, The Feathertale Review and This Magazine.

Hi Elaine, saw your book on my local library and as we share an unusual surname (the only Will’s in the UK are related to my family I believe). Given my daughter Kelly has a BA in Fine Art and is currently sudying for her masters, i thought the similarities were perhaps less of a coincidence? I have an Aunt and cousins in Vancouver although my uncle George Will lived there till he passed some 30 years ago, if you’re interested Kellys facebook is Kelly Art. Regardless keep up the great work.
    All the best
